I have also incorporated subtractive techniques; I'll scrape colors away leaving some initial levels of glazed colors to show through. <br /><br />I love this new process as it is very free and non-limiting... allowing discoveries every moment I am painting.<br /><br />The Undercurrent, Breach and The Transformation reflect the direction I am exploring.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/352570425954611562-5685694096052021403?l=stevebarylick.blogspot.com'/></div>Abstract Painterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06050312014797566291noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-352570425954611562.post-30626607882699509972008-06-20T14:08:00.000-07:002008-06-20T15:59:27.689-07:00<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fHXAF5cG1YA/SFwexF8uaAI/AAAAAAAAAAk/7N1r8bNTVIQ/s1600-h/blog_image_01.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fHXAF5cG1YA/SFwexF8uaAI/AAAAAAAAAAk/7N1r8bNTVIQ/s400/blog_image_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5214076297347491842" /></a><i><center>Masquerade,</i> acrylic on canvas, 24"x48", 2008</center><br><br>When I started painting <i>Masquerade</i> my intention was to <br />radically alter my color palette... hence the blacks and grays<br />as the predominant tones.<br /><br />There is nothing subtle about black until you start to manipulate white and create tonal ranges into medium warm grays.<br /><br />And on the white field, which I leave plenty of white, it became very apparent I could manage such a contrast.<br /><br />As the painting progressed it became one my favorite as it is so different from the others in this body of work.<br /><br />Not only is the black striking, the composition proceeds from right to left and with a subtle, yet defined 'break' about two-thirds of the way... and the colors that I worked into and over the black really pop.<br /><br />And it is on the top third of the canvas as well... does it represent a musical score?
